L'influsso dello psicologo inglese James Sully (1842-1923) sul problema legato ai processi di conoscenza è stato finora poco indagato, a causa della sua scarsa notorietà. Se una maggiore attenzione è stata riservata all'opera Pessimism, del 1877, e allo studio sul libero arbitrio e la volontà, molto meno analizzato è stato il fenomeno illusorio all'interno dei processi intellettuali e conoscitivi.
