In the wake of lively interests that Leonardo had shown for botany applied to painting and beyond, of his extraordinary scientific insights linked to the study of the plant world and the ecological vision of nature in general, the present contribution focuses on pharmaceutical herbalism, an area that had aroused the stimulating curiosity of the genius of Vinci. The survey, contextualized to the debate developed in the old regime on the controversial dietetic value of plants, using above all the specialist treatises of the time, dwells in particular on the various ways of using edible herbs, at the center of various interests between social value, gastronomic uses and therapeutic purposes.

Sulla scia dei vivaci interessi che Leonardo aveva dimostrato per la botanica applicata alla pittura e non solo, delle sue straordinarie intuizioni scientifiche legate allo studio del mondo vegetale e alla visione ecologica della natura in generale, il presente contributo pone l'attenzione sull'erboristica farmaceutica, un ambito che pure aveva suscitato la stimolante curiosità del genio di Vinci. L'indagine, contestualizzata al dibattito sviluppatosi in antico regime sul controverso valore dietetico dei vegetali, utilizzando soprattutto i trattati specialistici del tempo, si sofferma in particolare sulle varie modalità d'impiego delle erbe commestibili o 'erbaggi mangerecci', al centro di vari interessi fra valenza sociale, usi gastronomici e scopi terapeutici.
