In Roman tradition, Lucretia is the first republican matron. Compared to the hyper-characterized women of the monarchical age, from Hersilia to Egeria, from Tanaquil to Tullia, her attitudes and virtues are those of a next-door wife: faithfulness to husband, domestic wool-working, undisputed acceptance of her position within the family. In a sense, Lucretia can be considered the founder of the ordo matronarum. Her own self-killing stems from the inability to fulfil her role as wife and mother of Collatinus' future children.

Dans la tradition romaine, Lucrèce est la première matrone républicaine. Comparée avec les femmes sur-caractérisées de l'âge monarchique, d'Hersilia à Égérie, de Tanaquil à Tullia, ses attitudes et ses vertus sont celles de l'épouse ordinaire : fidélité au mari, travail domestique de la laine, pleine acceptation de sa position subordonnée au sein de la famille. Lucrèce peut être considérée, pour ainsi dire, la fondatrice de l'ordo matronarum. Le suicide même découle de l'impossibilité de remplir son rôle d'épouse et de mère des futurs enfants de Collatin.
