Una lettura storica delle pandemie. I ri-corsi innovativi

Abstract

There have been many pandemics in the past, but the answer - i.e. isolation - has sometimes been similar to ours. An important difference, however, concerned the conditions of our situation. In fact, recent advances in technology have been so revolutionary that we have been able to close ourselves in our homes without losing contact with the outside world: something simply unthinkable only a few years ago. Furthermore, we generally listened with confidence to the topics of science. In the past, and even in recent times, things went differently and there was often who talked of "divine punishment", or looked for plague spreaders and scapegoats. Anyway we don't have to think that historians know what will happen in the future. As they use to look at the past, they clearly help us understand the present in a better way, but the future remains in our own hands. However, it can be said that this pandemic - as well as the awareness of the planet's environmental and climatic crisis and of the increase in inequalities - led us to a scenario quite different from the 20th century, and this certainly faces us to a new kind of challenges.

Ci sono state molte pandemie nel passato, ma la risposta - l'isolamento - è stata talora simile dalla nostra. Una differenza importante ha riguardato però le condizioni con cui si è oggi affrontata la situazione. Infatti i progressi recenti della tecnologia sono stati così rivoluzionari da permetterci di chiuderci nelle nostre case senza perdere i contatti col mondo esterno: cosa impensabile ancora soltanto pochi anni fa. Un'altra differenza ha riguardato poi il nostro atteggiamento di fondo. In genere si è infatti prestato ascolto agli argomenti della scienza. Nel passato invece, e anche in tempi recenti, le cose non sono andate così e si parlato di "castighi divini", cercando anche "untori" e capri espiatori. Non bisogna comunque pensare che gli storici sappiano cosa accadrà in futuro. Essi certo, guardando il passato, ci aiutano a capire il presente (e già non è poco), ma il futuro resta nelle nostre mani. Si può dire però che questa pandemia - così come la presa di coscienza della crisi ambientale e climatica del pianeta o l'accrescersi delle diseguaglianze - ci abbia condotto in uno scenario diverso da quello del XX secolo: il che ci pone certamente di fronte a sfide di tipo nuovo.
