Il colera in Terra d'Otranto in età liberale: ordine pubblico, sfiducia e azioni di protesta

All'interno del variegato quadro delle epidemie e delle pandemie che hanno interessato l'Italia in età contemporanea, il saggio si sofferma sul caso del colera, uno dei più interessanti da privilegiare poiché esercitò un forte impatto sociale, andando ad incidere profondamente nell'immaginario collettivo tanto da essere considerato una «malattia di tutti». In particolare, attraverso l'adozione della prospettiva microanalitica, il contributo privilegia un'area del Mezzogiorno d'Italia come l'antica provincia di Terra d'Otranto (coincidente con le attuali province di Brindisi, Lecce e Taranto) e in un arco cronologico compreso orientativamente tra gli anni '60 dell'800 e la Prima guerra mondiale, indagando sulla gestione dell'emergenza sanitaria e dell'ordine pubblico e ricostruendo i meccanismi di fiducia/sfiducia e le azioni di protesta che si vennero a creare.

Within the diverse and complex landscape of epidemics and pandemics that affected Italy in the contemporary era, this article focuses on cholera, one of the most significant cases to examine due to its profound social impact. Cholera deeply shaped the collective imagination, to the point of being regarded as a "disease of all". Adopting a microanalytical perspective, the study concentrates on a specific area of southern Italy, namely the former province of Terra d'Otranto (corresponding to the present-day provinces of Brindisi, Lecce, and Taranto), and on a chronological framework roughly spanning from the 1860s to the First World War. The article examines the management of the public health emergency and the maintenance of public order, while also reconstructing the dynamics of trust and mistrust and the forms of protest that emerged in response to the epidemic.
