Descrizioni e aspetti etnografici nel Trattato sui Turchi di Giorgio di Ungheria

Il contributo esamina il Tractatus tardo-quattrocentesco di Giorgio di Ungheria che, pur rientrando nel contesto della coeva controversistica domenicana anti-islamica, sembra discostarsi dai suoi stilemi tradizionali, se non altro per una sua marcata attenzione al dato descrittivo della realtà. Nondimeno, occorre chiarire subito che se l’Autore cercò, preliminarmente, di descrivere con realismo quella società ottomana, da lui direttamente conosciuta durante la sua ventennale prigionia trascorsa in Oriente, la vera specificità del testo consiste sì nella costruzione di quella testimonianza etnografica, ma anche – e soprattutto – nel rifiuto dell’incondizionata fiducia nell’empirìa, considerata come una pericolosa ingenuità. Infatti, rendendosi conto della pericolosa capacità seduttiva della fede musulmana, Giorgio intese innanzitutto descrivere le presunte virtù del mondo ottomano, svelandone poi la falsa natura. Sembra naturale, a questo punto, sottolineare la grande importanza di questo testo che, intendendo mettere in guardia dal grande pericolo islamico, ci ha lasciato interessanti descrizioni su certe qualità degli Ottomani e su alcuni aspetti notevoli del loro mondo e della loro organizzazione religiosa e sociale.

This paper examines George of Hungary’s Tractatus, written in the late fifteenth century. Even though it is included in the context of the coeval Dominican anti-islamic controversy, it seems stray from her traditional stylistic elements, at least for his strong focus on descriptive data of reality. Nevertheless, it is necessary to clarify immediately that if the Author tried, preliminarily, to describe with realism that Ottoman society, directly known by him during his twenty years of captivity in the East, the real specificity of the text consists in the construction of that ethnographic description, but also – and especially – in the rejection of the unconditional trust to empirics, judged as a dangerous credulity. Indeed, conscious of the dangerous attractive power of the Muslim faith, above all George attempted to expose the false nature of the supposedly virtuous Ottoman habits. It seems natural, at this point, to stress the great importance of this text that, intending warn against the great islamic danger, has left us interesting descriptions of some qualities of the Ottomans and of some remarkable aspects of their world and of their religious and social organization.
