Abstract

The sacrality of many places of cult is often related to particular environmental features such as woods, big trees, mountains, caves etc.The underground world, as it represents a threshold between the known and the mystery, always stimulated and fascinated the collective imaginary during the human kind evolution. These places constitute part of our naturalistic and socio-cultural heritage: that's why they ought to be kept safe. In this paper the authors introduce a preliminary result of a wider study finalized to the knowledge and the recovery of the karstic heritage within the Consortium "Trulli, Grotte, Mare", in the south-eastern Murge (Apulia, Italy). People inhabiting this area is still strongly linked to the country traditions: for centuries the community lived in a land characterized by both epigean and hypogean karst. The secular relationship between man and nature, sometimes a hard cohabitation with stony and thirsty fields, favored the birth and the persistence of suggestions, also religious, fed by the mystery surrounding the underground environment. The authors began a study regarding those natural caves that became places of cult after events that stimulated the popular imaginary, with the purpose to assess their state of maintenance and, if necessary, to delineate a strategy for their preservation.
