Through an examination of title 47.7 of the Digest, the article reconstructs the reflections of Roman jurists on the meaning of the term arbor and the plant species that fell within the definition of tree (in particular the vine, but also the ivy, the willow and the reeds) and benefited from the resulting legal protections.
