De Viti de Marco e il Mezzogiorno: nuova luce dai quotidiani

Antonio De Viti de Marco viene unanimemente inscritto nella corrente di pensiero liberale e liberista che tra la fine del XIX e i primi decenni del XX secolo attribuiva al Mezzogiorno un vantaggio comparato nella produzione agricola. Vi è piena condivisione anche sul suo ruolo di leader del movimento antiprotezionista, che perseguiva l’obiettivo della via naturale allo sviluppo economico invocando maggiore libertà degli scambi e minore intervento pubblico. Ciò che invece ha generato differenti interpretazioni nella storiografia è il rapporto tra il suo meridionalismo e l’insieme delle sue riflessioni sia scientifiche che politiche. In questo saggio utilizziamo i risultati di una recente ricerca che ha affrontato il tema della collaborazione degli economisti ai giornali quotidiani per chiarire il principale oggetto di divergenza degli studi su De Viti de Marco, vale a dire la questione se il Mezzogiorno occupi un posto centrale nel contesto della sua produzione teorica e della sua attività politica, ovvero se ne costituisca semplicemente un corollario. Ciò che emerge con chiarezza è che nella pratica politica il Mezzogiorno fu per De Viti un’assoluta priorità, che egli perseguì sacrificando talvolta l’intransigente coerenza teorica.

Antonio De Viti de Marco is unanimously included in the free market and free trade oriented current of thought, which between the end of the nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth attributed to the South of Italy a comparative advantage in agricultural production. In addition, there is complete agreement on his role of leader of the anti-protectionist movement, which pursued the objective of the natural way to economic development, invoking greater freedom in trade and less public intervention. What has, on the other hand, generated differing interpretations in the historiography is the relation between his concern over the Italian Southern question and his scientific and political thinking, taken as a whole. In this essay we make use of a recent study dealing with the collaboration of economists with the daily press to clarify the principal object of divergence in the studies on De Viti de Marco, in other words the problem of whether the issue of the Southern question occupies a central place in the context of his theoretical production and political activities, or whether it constitutes simply one aspect of them. What clearly emerges is that as far as his political actions go, for De Viti the South of Italy was an absolute priority, pursued on occasion at the cost of surrendering what were normally intransigently coherent principles.
