Aliba e Metaponto: antichi idronimi greci della Lucania

Per quanto riguarda l’origine e il significato del toponimo "Metaponto", bisogna precisare che è un nome greco (derivante dal dialetto acheo, un dialetto antico del Peloponneso). Questo dialetto veniva parlato nell’antichità dagli abitanti della regione che oggi si chiama Achaia. In questa regione, il dialetto che si parla oggi ha come base l’antico dialetto acheo. Grazie alla ricerca che abbiamo effettuato sull’origine del nome di Metaponto, grazie all’utilizzo di un ricco repertorio bibliografico che comprende tutti gli autori dell’antichità greca e romana, siamo riusciti a individuare due aspetti principali: 1. L’aspetto storico 2. L’aspetto naturalistico Metaponto denota in greco "una città costruita fra i due fiumi: il Bradano e il Basento e molto vicino al mare Ionio".

Metapontion is a toponym of Greek origin and its history indicates the institution of a new city, founded by Μetabus and by a group of Achaeans (a Greek tribe from Peloponnesus) on the coast of the Lucania region Basilicata). In the archaic era, the Samnites, an italic tribe destroyed the city of Metabus. In the 6 century b.C, Leucippus came with a group of Acheans and rebuilt the city. Leucippus called this city "Metapòntion". Μέταβος or Mετάποντος is the name of the mythical Greek hero, who is reputed to be the foundator of the city of Mετάποντον. Μέταβον or Μετάποντον are the forms of the archaic Greek language indicating the city situated between the two rivers (the river Bradanum and the river Basentum). The evolution of this form produced the form of the Classical Greek Μεταπόντιον (a form which exists also in the medieval and in Modern Greek to indicate the city of Metapontum). Due to the evolution of this Greek form, we have in Classical Latin the form Metapontum and in italian the form Metapònto. The people of the Basilicata region (in Southern Italy) nowadays use the form Metapòndə or Mətapòndə, in all the dialects, in order to indicate the ruins of the ancient city of Metapontum, the block of the Municipality of Bernalda, near Matera or the plain of Metapontum, which is situated near the Ionian Sea. Also, they use this form in order to indicate their Greek origin and the Greek presence in the Basilicata Region.
